The Process of Recovery – Short Poem
I love this poem; I have been looking for it for awhile. Those of you have walked with me for awhile hear me referring to; I am so excited to have found it.
I want to share it with all my friends that struggle through the process of recovery. I share it for hope and encouragement!
AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS by Portia Nelson
I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in
I am lost…I am helpless
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
but, it isn’t my fault.
It takes a long time to get out.
III
I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk,
I see it there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit.
my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
V
I walk down another street.
For those of us that are in recovery from hurts, hang ups or habits or for those of us that grew up in dysfunctional families this is a poem of hope. There is hope that you do not have to continue to act on old beliefs or old realities. Today is a new day, God gives fresh mercy every day and with the renewing of your mind you can take a different street.
With much hope for change in your life and countless others for 2010.
Blessings ~ Tammy
